Schools Health and Wellbeing Improvement Research Network
Resources
Members of our network have access to a variety of resources to support school health improvement activities. SHINE resources are typically free and open access via our website. However, the SHINE online pupil mental health survey is only accessible to schools which are members of the SHINE network. Membership and use of the survey are free to individual Scottish schools.
A number of classroom, health and wellbeing resources have been co-developed with teaching staff and young people through SHINE affiliated projects. Click on the links below to download or access the various resources which have been organised by HWB topics.
HEALTH DATA LITERACY
The SHINE Interactive Data Dashboard was developed to support schools and young people to use health data to understand a school’s wellbeing context and target improvement planning confidently. The dashboard contains results from the 2018 Health Behaviour in School-aged Children (HBSC) survey – you can select health topics of interest to answer questions about how Scotland’s young people’s health was doing before the COVID pandemic in 2018, find out the changes over time in young people’s health since th2 1990’s and compare Scotland’s young people’s health to other countries.
The Why Big Data Matters lesson plans were developed as a collaboration between Generation Scotland (University of Edinburgh) and SHINE (University of Glasgow) to support young people to better understand health research methods, how health data can be used to improve wellbeing and to support young people deciding whether to take part in health research.
ACHIEVING POSITIVE WELLBEING & GOAL PURSUIT USING FUTURE THINKING
SHINE partnered with Senior Lecturer in Clinical Psychology, Jala Rizeq, and PhD student, Natalia Verdugo, from the Mental Health and Wellbeing Unit at the University of Glasgow and schools and young people from East Ayrshire Council to co-create a new resource for school communities to support young people to achieve positive goals using future thinking.
This wellbeing resource pack for use in secondary schools facilitates psychoeducation around helpful ways of thinking to manage emotions, support engagement with positive goal pursuit, and maintain positive wellbeing. It is meant to support pupils in practicing helpful thinking about future events, supporting pupils in setting intentions, planning, and approaching situations that can help them achieve positive goals.
Designed for S1 to S3 classes, the three 40-minute lesson plans include notes for teachers, classroom activities, power point presentations, worksheets and fact files as well as a debate pack. This collaboration was funded by Research Data Scotland.
The resource includes the guidelines for teachers along with the accompanying lesson plans, power points and worksheets for three lessons:
- Wellbeing and how it impacts our lives
- Introduction to future thinking
- Future thinking and behaviour
We are keen to track and monitor the use of this resource. To receive the link to this free resource, please let us know 3 characteristics of your school eg – which country it is in, whether it is primary or secondary etc and whether it is Local Authority or independent etc. This will help us to see how the resource is being used. Thank you.
